EVENT: Inaugural Ironman World Championship Triathlon

LOCATION: Waikiki, Honolulu, South Oahu Island, Hawaii
DESCRIPTION:
Oahu Island event etablished by John and Judy Collins to find the toughest
endurance athlete.
Fifteen people participated in an event that
combined three of Hawaii's most difficult endurance races,
the 2.4 mil Waikiki Roughwater Swim, the 112 mile
Round Oahu Bicycle Race, and the 26.2 mile Honolulu Marathon.
The entry fee that year was $3.00, twelve of the
fifteen starters finished the race, and the winner was
Gordon Haller with a time of 11 hours and 46 minutes.
