EVENT: 7th Ironman World Championship Triathlon

DESCRIPTION:
A qualification system was introduced in 1983 along with
a 17 hour cut-off time for finishing. A lottery system
was also introduced to give everyday athletes an opportunity
to race alongside world class triathletes.
Sylviane Puntous of Canada became the first non-U.S. woman
to win the female Ironman title, with her twin sister
Patricia Puntous finishing in second place. Dave Scott
earned his third Ironman title by finishing first overall
with a time of nine hours, 5 minutes and 57 seconds.
