Timeline of Outrigger Resorts History

A timeline featuring significant dates in the history of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts company.

1963
Roy Kelley bought the old Outrigger Canoe Club from the estate of Queen Emma of Hawaii and built the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel on that site.

1967
The Outrigger Waikiki On The Beach hotel opened and it was first hotel to carry the Outrigger name.

Outrigger became a chain of hotels in Hawaii

1982
Outrigger purchased the luxury-class Prince Kuhio Hotel

1986
Outrigger had become the largest hotel chain in Hawaii with more than 7,000 rooms.

1989
Outrigger added the Royal Waikoloan Hotel

1993 Kauai Hilton became the Outrigger Kauai Beach hotel

1996 Outrigger opened its first hotel outside the United States, the Outrigger Marshall Islands Resort.

1999
Outrigger spun off 15 of its up to 3-star properties to create the OHANA Hotels and Resorts hotel chain, reserving th Outrigger brand for its higher-end and five-star luxury properties.

2014
the Outrigger hotel chain was operation 11,000 rooms in 40 hotels worldwide

2016 March Outrigger sold its four Australian hotels to the Mantra Group. (the Nantra Group was acquired in by AccorHotels in 2017.

2016 November the company entered into an agreement to be acquired by an affiliate of KSL Capital Partners, a Denver, Colorado based firm that specializes in travel and leisure investments.

2018
Jeff Wagoner joined the company as president and CEO, effective April 26, 2018. Also in 2018, KSL Resorts Co-founder and CEO Scott Dalecio, who had been serving as Outrigger’s interim CEO since early 2017, was appointed executive chairman of the global hospitality brand. By 2018 only two hotels still had the Ohana brand: "OHANA Waikiki East by Outrigger" and "OHANA Waikiki Malia by Outrigger". By 2018 Outrigger's portfolio includes 38 hotels, condominiums and vacation resort properties operated, owned and managed.
