February 2, 2002 HAWAIIAN RHYTHM & BLUES MELE 2002 a triple-bill featuring former Bluesbreaker guitarist Walter Trout and the Radicals, Blind Pig recording artists the Debbie Davis Blues Band, and rhythm and blues diva E.C. Scott. Slack key artist Cindy Combs will start the 5 pm show, which will take place at the Kona Brewing Co.'s Brewhouse Oasis. 808/324-2739

DATE: February 2, 2002 WAIMEA CHERRY BLOSSOM HERITAGE FESTIVAL The upcountry town of Waimea hosts this community cultural event in honor of Fred Makino, founder of Hawaii's first Japanese newspaper, which was founded in 1912. There will be ethnic presentations, a parade, crafts from over 30 vendors, foods, and many fun events planned for the whole family. The Waimea Outdoor Circle will hold its annual plant sale at the New Hope Church Hall, and kimono dressing and Japanese tea ceremony demonstrations are set to take place in the lobby of the Kahilu Theater, to describe just a couple of the day's festival activities, which will go from 9 am till 3 pm.

DATE: February 9, 2002 LAURIE LEWIS AND TOM ROZUM, the internationally acclaimed bluegrass duo (fiddle and mandolin, with vocals) who have many fans here on the Island of Hawaii, will be back again to do a benefit concert at the Aloha Theatre for Kona Krafts, the local facility that helps adults with physical and mental challenges learn skills that help them become productive and contributing members of society. The Voggy Mtn. Ramblers will be opening for them. Showtime is 7:30 pm; tickets are $15, and will be available at Rambler shows, Mele Kai Music, Soundwave Music, and Kona Krafts. DATE: February 10, 2002 PORTUGUESE DAY IN THE PARK Held at Gilbert Carvalho Park in Hilo from 10 am to 3 pm., this event features free Portuguese Bean Soup and stone oven baked sweet bread for all. Other Portuguese food items such as malasadas, pickled onions, sausage, etc. are available for sale. The Hawaii County Band will give a free concert. DATE: February 11-23, 2002 HAWAII WOOD GUILD'S ANNUAL WEST HAWAII WOOD SHOW will be held this year at the Kailua Village Artists Gallery at Lani Hau Shopping Center. The opening reception will be from 5-8pm on February 16th, and the public is invited to come and meet the artists and craftmsmen participating in this year's show. Awards will be given for furniture, turning, and an award sponsored by the Hawaii Forest Industry Assn. will be given to a work using locally grown introduced species, to promote sustainable forestry. DATE: February 16, 2002 15th ANNUAL HOLUALOA TOWN VALENTINE DANCE Annual evening of good fun and dancing, with live music by Kona's own bluegrass band, The Voggy Mtn. Ramblers. A chance to get dressed up (if you want to!). Not just for couples, for everyone in the family; children must be accompanied by adults. Your ticket stub will be your entry into drawings all evening for door prizes donated by Holualoa businesses and galleries.
