TYPE: unincorporated local community
STATUS: mostly destroyed by an 1868 earthquake tsunami
ELEVATION: 85 feet above sea level
SITUATED:
- adjacent to the south side of Punaluu Beach
- was on a small bay known as Ninole cove
- that cove was at the shore of what is now Sea Mountain Golf Course
NOTES:
- one of two Big Island Ninoles (the other is in North Hilo)
- birthplace of Henry Opukahaia (1792–1818) | |
- one of the first native Hawaiians to become a Christian
